Vienna proudly presents: EuroGames 2024
The city of Vienna and Austria in general is hosting the EuroGames for the first time this year, which are held in a different major European city every year. Under the motto "Embrace Diversity", the sporting event is aimed at athletes who are part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
In over 30 competitions in 20 different sports, from basketball to chess to rowing, around 3,000 athletes from all over the world will compete against each other between July 17 and 20, 2024. In addition to a grand opening and closing ceremony and the sporting events themselves, there will be a five-day accompanying program to promote the acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community in sports.
Why do we need the EuroGames?
But why do we need a special event for queer people in sports? Members of the LGBTQIA+ community continuously experience exclusion and discrimination in sports clubs, clichés and stereotypes persist in many areas. Men's soccer for instance demonstrates this issue quite well: it was only in 2022 that the first active European professional soccer player came out gay. The EuroGames in the rainbow capital Vienna are therefore intended to better include people of all sexualities and gender identities in sports and to break down prejudices and stigma among non-queer people.
LGBTQIA+ friendly hotel in Vienna
Boutiquehotel Stadthalle is clearly positioning itself as an LGBTQIA+ friendly hotel and is a partner hotel of the EuroGames 2024. We welcome all people regardless of their gender identity or sexuality, because we see diversity as a strength, which we also live in our team, for example.
