Vienna Opera Ball

by Elena Schöber

High time to dress up!!

Put on your most elegant ball gown or your most precious cuff links and off you go…to watch the opera ball on your private TV set :-)because actually attending the opera ball is nearly impossible.

The Vienna Opera Ball is the absolute highlight of Vienna’s ball season, but also an important cultural event that is watched and followed worldwide. It is mostly attended by politicians, entrepreneurs and the cultural VIPs from Austria and from all over the world. It takes place on the 3rd of March 2011 in Vienna’s Opera house which is changed and transformed into Austria’s most glamorous ballroom in no time.

The opening ceremony of the ball follows a traditional sequence: The president of Austria takes place in his loge, the national anthem of Austria is played and the first half of the 180 dancing couples enter the ballroom. Usually, this is followed by performances of classical singers as well as by a dancing performance of Austria’s ballet. Afterwards the second half of the dancing couples enter and they perform the opening waltz. When the traditional words “Alles Walzer” were spoken, all the other guests may join in and the evening takes its course. This year it will be the 55th time that the Vienna Opera Ball will take place. If you can’t be there, do not miss it on TV. It is broadcast live by Austria’s broadcasting company ORF.
