DONAUINSELFEST – June 2017
The biggest open air festival in Europe with free admission goes into the 34th round this year from the 23rd-25th June. Last year, all records of visitor number have been broken and have reached 3,1 million visitors which makes everyone’s anticipations grow for the next Donauinselfest happening in June. This year, visitors are musically spoiled with 18 stages and islands on a festival area as big as 4,5 kilometres. In the 120 tents and pagodas a total of 600 hours of program will be played. There is every musical genre represented so that everyone will be able to celebrate in exactly that style they like.
The “Donauinsel” (island in the river Donau) was artificially constructed between 1972 and 1988 and stretches over 21 kilometres in length but is only 250 metres wide. The park in the middle of the island has been a place for recreation for a long time for the Viennese. Originally the island has been built to protect Vienna from flooding.
The motto of this year’s “Donauinselfest” hasn’t been announced yet but will be at a press conference at the beginning of April. The complete program will be out by May 2017, according to the organisers. For more information, click here.
